Getting Tested

A gentle guide to what happens during your urodynamic test appointment.

What are the components of Urodynamics test

UDS test comprises of several tests like:

2 days voiding diary

Uroflowmetry

Uroflowmetry with EMG

UDS

UDS with EMG

What is Urodynamics

It is a specialised test which evaluates how does your bladder function

Who needs the test

There are certain diseases wherein the urinary bladder behaves/ functions abnormally causing various urinary symptoms like

  • increased frequency of passing urine

  • urine leakage while straining/ coughing

  • severe sudden uncontrollable urge to pass urine

  • bedwetting

  • repeated urinary tract infections.

Urodynamics tells us about the functioning of your bladder and tries to answer what is the cause of your urinary symptoms.

Your urologist/ gynaecologist will be able to tell you whether you need the test.

How is UDS performed?

You will be asked to pass urine in a computerised pot before start of the procedure (Uroflowmetry). You will be asked to lie down on a couch. A soft catheter/ tube will be introduced in your bladder through your urethra (urinary opening). Another soft tube will be inserted into your anus. you will be asked to sit or stand and both the tubes will be connected to a computer sensor and computerised pump. Water will be pumped into your bladder. You will be expected to inform when you feel urge to pass urine and you will have to pass urine when instructed to do so. During the test, you will be asked to cough/ perform certain other manoeuvres. Any occasions of urinary leak and its cause will be noted.

How is uroflowmetry performed?

It is a simple test wherein you will be asked to pass urine in a specialized jar which has sensors to measure flow of urine. You can pass urine in sitting or standing position - whatever is comfortable for you. We usually take two recordings of flow - i.e, you pass urine twice. You should have sufficient urge to pass urine before each void.

Keep some time in hand. Drinking lots of fluids helps make you pass urine faster.

How is the test performed in children?

It is performed in children in the same way as in adults. The smallest possible sized catheter is used in children. The procedure is painless, but children get apprehensive as they are made to stay in a single place.

We have made provision for cartoon on television, toys, chocolate, smiley stickers and stamps to try to keep the child engaged during the test

How is the test result used for treatment planning?

The test tells us about how is the bladder behaving when it is storing urine and when it is trying to pass urine

  • Bladder may show irritability when it is filling up which results in increased frequency/ urgency

  • Bladder pressures may rise when it is filling up which can cause damage to the kidneys

  • During voiding, flow of urine may be poor if there is a block in path of urine flow which needs surgical correction or if the bladder is not generating enough force when it may need catheterisation

FAQs

Is the test painful

No. you will have an unpleasant sensation when the catheter/ tube is inserted. You will not be able to feel anything thereafter. We use numbing jelly liberally to reduce your discomfort. You may have some stinging sensation when you try to pass urine with the tube in the urethra, but the sensation goes away as soon as you start passing urine.

Are any special preparations needed before the test?

Yes, a few preparatoins are needed before the test:

  • A fresh urine report is needed before the appointment

  • Some antibiotic is usually started one day before the test and is continued for a total of 3 – 5 days.

  • You need to have clear bowel movements before the test – we usually prescribe some tablets (to be taken by mouth) or suppositories (to be inserted through the anus).

  • Please inform us about any medicines that you are taking for your urinary symptoms – some medicines need to be stopped like Tropan/ Mira/ Roliten/ Solifast etc

I have a urine report that is 1 month old, will it work?

No, we usually ask for a fresh urine report which should be done within 15 days of the date of the urodynamics test. We ask for it to be sure that there no UTI currently when we are performing the UDS test, otherwise it may flare up.

Do I need to drink a lot of fluid before the test?

No, drink water as per your thirst. drinking excess water v]can make interpretation of the results difficult

Why am I being asked to shave the local area

We need to stick the urethral and rectal catheters in place with use of sticky taped. Any hair in the area will make it difficult for the tapes to stick and cause even more discomfort while removal of the tubes

Are there any risks or side effects?

You may experience mild burning sensation once or twice before passing urine after the catheter is removed. There are rare chances that you may develop urinary infection because of the test.

How much time is needed for the report to be available?

The test usually takes around 30 – 45 minutes. But we usually ask the patients to come prepared for 2 - 3 hours as we have 3 - 4 patients lined up for the tests and some patients may take longer than usual to pass urine

I have a urine catheter. Can the test be done?

Yes, many of the patients who come to us have a urinary catheter. We remove the catheter, insert our special urodynamics catheter and perform the test. At the end of the test, a fresh catheter which is similar to the one you came with, is inserted

How much time is needed for the test?

The report is usually available 3 - 4 days after the test. In cases where urgent reporting is required, a provisional report may be informed to your treating physician/ urologist so that treatment is not delayed. We provide PDF copy of the report online - you need not come back to collect the report.
